RSF Strike on Displaced Civilians’ Vehicle Kills Dozens

(MENAFN) Government officials in Sudan reported Saturday that a deadly drone attack killed at least 24 civilians—including women, children, and elderly individuals—after the Rapid Support Forces struck a transport vehicle carrying displaced persons in Al-Rahad city, North Kordofan state.

Provincial authorities released a statement declaring they "strongly condemns, in the harshest terms, the horrific terrorist crime committed by the RSF militia," identifying the strike as an intentional assault on unarmed refugees traveling from South Kordofan state's Dubeiker region toward Al-Rahad.

The vehicle was hit by unmanned aerial weaponry at the city's southern gateway, officials confirmed, causing mass casualties among defenseless passengers.

"The attack resulted in the martyrdom of 24 unarmed civilians, including women, children and elderly people, in addition to the injury of a large number of civilians," the statement said.

State officials characterized the strike as "a grave and serious violation" of international humanitarian law, specifically protections governing civilians and displaced populations.

The Sudan Doctors Network issued a separate condemnation, labeling the assault "a new massacre" perpetrated by the RSF in North Kordofan. The medical organization confirmed the drone targeted a transport carrying refugees escaping South Kordofan violence as they entered Al-Rahad.
Medical sources verified 24 fatalities, including female victims and eight minors—two of them infants. Survivors sustained injuries requiring urgent care and were evacuated to Al-Rahad medical facilities operating under catastrophic conditions with critical shortages of essential supplies.

Deliberately attacking unarmed noncombatants, particularly those evacuating war zones and their transportation, represents "a full-fledged war crime and a violation of all humanitarian and international laws," the network declared, accusing the RSF of conducting systematic civilian-targeted violence with complete impunity.

The medical advocacy group assigned complete culpability to the RSF for what it termed a massacre and its resulting humanitarian fallout, demanding immediate international intervention to safeguard civilians and prosecute RSF commanders. The organization further demanded protection for displacement corridors and guaranteed humanitarian assistance delivery.

As of 0900 GMT, the RSF had not commented on the incident.

Territorial control across Sudan's 18 states remains divided: the RSF commands all five states throughout western Darfur, excluding army-controlled sections of North Darfur. Government forces maintain dominance across the other 13 states spanning southern, northern, eastern, and central regions, including capital city Khartoum.

The military confrontation between Sudan's armed forces and the RSF erupted in April 2023 and has killed thousands of people while displacing millions.
