Sudan Cholera Cases, Deaths Surge

(MENAFN) Sudan’s Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that 1,575 new cholera infections and 22 fatalities were reported nationwide over the past week, signaling a worsening public health emergency.

In an official statement, the ministry revealed that since the outbreak began in August 2024, the total number of cholera cases has surged to 101,450, with the death toll reaching 2,515 across all 18 states of the country.

This escalating health crisis unfolds amid Sudan’s protracted conflict, where the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in intense fighting since April 2023. The war has already claimed more than 20,000 lives and displaced an estimated 14 million people, according to the United Nations and local officials. However, independent research conducted by U.S. universities suggests the actual death toll may be significantly higher, approaching 130,000.
